MOLECULAR
Human Immunodefieciency Virus (HIV)
HIV testing by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a highly sensitive and specific test that can detect HIV RNA, the genetic material of the virus. PCR testing can be used to diagnose HIV infection earlier than other types of HIV tests, such as antibody tests.
PCR testing is typically done with a blood draw. The blood sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for HIV RNA. PCR testing can be used to diagnose HIV infection as early as 10-14 days after exposure to the virus.
PCR testing is also used to monitor the effectiveness of HIV treatment. People with HIV who are taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) can have undetectable levels of HIV RNA in their blood. This means that the virus is not replicating and is not able to infect other people. However, it is still important for people with HIV to continue taking ART, even if their viral load is undetectable.

Hepatitis B (HBV)
Hepatitis B testing by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a highly sensitive and specific test that can detect HBV DNA, the genetic material of the virus. PCR testing can be used to diagnose HBV infection earlier than other types of HBV tests, such as antibody tests.
PCR testing is typically done with a blood draw. The blood sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for HBV DNA. PCR testing can be used to diagnose HBV infection as early as 30 days after exposure to the virus. PCR testing is also used to monitor the effectiveness of HBV treatment. People with HBV who are taking antiviral therapy can have undetectable levels of HBV DNA in their blood. This means that the virus is not replicating and is not able to infect other people. However, it is still important for people with HBV to continue taking antiviral therapy, even if their viral load is undetectable.
PCR testing is not routinely recommended for HBV screening. It is typically used for people who have a high risk of HBV infection, such as people who have been recently exposed to the virus or people who are taking antiviral therapy.

Hepatitis C (HCV)
Hepatitis C testing by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a highly sensitive and specific test that can detect HCV RNA, the genetic material of the virus. PCR testing can be used to diagnose HCV infection earlier than other types of HCV tests, such as antibody tests.
PCR testing is typically done with a blood draw. The blood sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for HCV RNA. PCR testing can be used to diagnose HCV infection as early as 1-2 week
PCR testing is also used to monitor the effectiveness of HCV treatment. People with HCV who are taking antiviral therapy can have undetectable levels of HCV RNA in their blood. This means that the virus is not replicating and is not able to infect other people. However, it is still important for people with HCV to continue taking antiviral therapy, even if their viral load is undetectable.
PCR testing is not routinely recommended for HCV screening. It is typically used for people who have a high risk of HCV infection, such as people who have been recently exposed to the virus or people who are taking antiviral therapy.

Zika Virus
Zika virus testing by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a highly sensitive and specific test that can detect Zika virus RNA, the genetic material of the virus. PCR testing can be used to diagnose Zika virus infection earlier than other types of Zika virus tests, such as antibody tests.
PCR testing is typically done with a blood draw or urine sample. The sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for Zika virus RNA. PCR testing can be used to diagnose Zika virus infection as early as 1-2 weeks after exposure to the virus. PCR testing is also used to monitor the effectiveness of Zika virus treatment. There is no specific treatment for Zika virus infection, but most people recover fully without treatment. PCR testing can be used to determine when the virus has cleared from the body.
PCR testing is not routinely recommended for Zika virus screening. It is typically used for people who have a high risk of Zika virus infection, such as people who have travelled to an area where the virus is circulating or people who have had sex with someone who has travelled to an area where the virus is circulating.

West Nile Virus
West Nile virus (WNV) testing by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a highly sensitive and specific test that can detect WNV RNA, the genetic material of the virus. PCR testing can be used to diagnose WNV infection earlier than other types of WNV tests, such as antibody tests.
PCR testing is typically done with a blood draw or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample. The sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for WNV RNA. PCR testing can be used to diagnose WNV infection as early as 3-5 days after exposure to the virus.
PCR testing is also used to monitor the effectiveness of WNV treatment. There is no specific treatment for WNV infection, but most people recover fully without treatment. PCR testing can be used to determine when the virus has cleared from the body.PCR testing is not routinely recommended for WNV screening. It is typically used for people who have a high risk of WNV infection, such as people who have been bitten by a mosquito in an area where the virus is circulating or people who have neurological symptoms of WNV infection.
