SEROLOGY
hEPATITIS b vIRUS (hbv)
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) testing by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) is a highly sensitive and specific test that can detect HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) in the blood. HBsAg is a protein that is found on the surface of HBV-infected cells.
HBV ELISA testing is typically done with a blood draw. The blood sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for HBsAg. HBV ELISA testing can be used to diagnose HBV infection as early as 1-2 months after exposure to the virus.
HBV ELISA testing is also used to monitor the effectiveness of HBV treatment. People with HBV who are taking antiviral therapy can have undetectable levels of HBsAg in their blood. This means that the virus is not replicating and is not able to infect other people. However, it is still important for people with HBV to continue taking antiviral therapy, even if their viral load is undetectable.
HBV ELISA testing is a routine part of prenatal care and newborn screening. It is also recommended for people who have a high risk of HBV infection, such as people who have been exposed to HBV through sexual contact, blood transfusion, or needle sharing.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV)
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) is a highly sensitive and specific test that can detect HCV antibodies in the blood. HCV antibodies are proteins that the body produces in response to HCV infection.
HCV ELISA testing is typically done with a blood draw. The blood sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for HCV antibodies. HCV ELISA testing can be used to diagnose HCV infection as early as 6-8 weeks after exposure to the virus.
HCV ELISA testing is also used to monitor the effectiveness of HCV treatment. People with HCV who are taking antiviral therapy can have undetectable levels of HCV antibodies in their blood. This means that the virus is not replicating and is not able to infect other people. However, it is still important for people with HCV to continue taking antiviral therapy, even if their viral load is undetectable.
HCV ELISA testing is a routine part of prenatal care and newborn screening. It is also recommended for people who have a high risk of HCV infection, such as people who have been exposed to HCV through sexual contact, blood transfusion, or needle sharing.

Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV)
Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) testing by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) is a highly sensitive and specific test that can detect HTLV antibodies in the blood. HTLV antibodies are proteins that the body produces in response to HTLV infection.
HTLV ELISA testing is typically done with a blood draw. The blood sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for HTLV antibodies. HTLV ELISA testing can be used to diagnose HTLV infection as early as 2-4 weeks after exposure to the virus.
HTLV ELISA testing is also used to monitor the progression of HTLV infection and to assess the effectiveness of treatment. People with HTLV who are taking antiviral therapy can have undetectable levels of HTLV antibodies in their blood. However, it is still important for people with HTLV to continue taking antiviral therapy, even if their viral load is undetectable.
HTLV ELISA testing is recommended for people who have a high risk of HTLV infection, such as people who have been exposed to HTLV through sexual contact, blood transfusion, or needle sharing. It is also recommended for people who have certain medical conditions, such as adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP).

Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) testing by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) is a highly sensitive and specific test that can detect CMV antibodies in the blood. CMV antibodies are proteins that the body produces in response to CMV infection.
CMV ELISA testing is typically done with a blood draw. The blood sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for CMV antibodies. CMV ELISA testing can be used to diagnose CMV infection as early as 2-4 weeks after exposure to the virus.
CMV ELISA testing is also used to monitor the progression of CMV infection and to assess the effectiveness of treatment. People with CMV who are taking antiviral therapy can have undetectable levels of CMV antibodies in their blood. However, it is still important for people with CMV to continue taking antiviral therapy, even if their viral load is undetectable.
CMV ELISA testing is recommended for people who have a high risk of CMV infection, such as pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and people who have received an organ transplant. It is also recommended for people who have certain medical conditions, such as AIDS and cancer.

Treponema Pallidum
Treponema pallidum (TP) testing by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) is a highly sensitive and specific test that can detect TP antibodies in the blood. TP antibodies are proteins that the body produces in response to TP infection, which causes syphilis.
TP ELISA testing is typically done with a blood draw. The blood sample is sent to a laboratory, where it is tested for TP antibodies. TP ELISA testing can be used to diagnose syphilis as early as 2-4 weeks after infection.
TP ELISA testing is also used to monitor the effectiveness of syphilis treatment. People with syphilis who are taking antibiotics can have undetectable levels of TP antibodies in their blood. However, it is still important for people with syphilis to complete their antibiotic treatment, even if their viral load is undetectable.
TP ELISA testing is recommended for people who have a high risk of syphilis infection, such as people who have had unprotected sex with multiple partners or people who have sex with sex workers. It is also recommended for pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions, such as HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
